In some cases, moderate updates were associated with ranking declines.
The research, published in March 2026, found that only pages with substantial content expansion, defined as adding 31–100% more material, showed statistically significant ranking improvements. Those pages gained an average of 5.45 positions, a net improvement of nearly 8 positions compared to a control group of pages that received no updates (p=0.026).

Results by Update Size

Research on search engine click-through rates suggests that small ranking drops can have outsized traffic consequences.
